New Mexico State University will join hundreds of educational, business and governmental organizations around the world in observing International Education week. NMSU’s International and Border Programs will offer four days of events and activities Nov. 17-20 including screenings of documentaries and talks about the state of internationalization at NMSU and the role of global education in preparing the next generation.
“NMSU’s Office of International and Border Programs is happy to observe our third International Education Week,” said Cornell Menking, associate provost of international and border programs. “This event is a nice opportunity for us to highlight the wonderful work of our students, faculty and staff in their efforts to bring global learning opportunities to our community.”
Most events and activities are free and open to the public and will begin on Monday, Nov. 17 with informational tables for the Peace Corps, Study Abroad, International Students and the Center for Latin American and Border Studies programs between 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Corbett Center first floor lobby.
Tuesday’s events begin with a presentation by Menking titled “The State of Internationalization at at NMSU” at 11:30 a.m. in the Corbett Center Auditorium, followed by a screening of the documentary, “Painting my Miracle: The story and conservation of the NMSU Retablo Collection” from 12-1 p.m. After the film, NMSU Creative Media Institute professor Philip Lewis will lead a discussion about the documentary. A U.S. Department of State presentation titled “Careers and Life in the Foreign and Civil Service will wrap up the day’s events from 2-3 p.m. in Corbett Center Senate Chambers, room 302.
Wednesday’s offerings begin with a Chinese-themed luncheon from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and a traditional Chinese dance between 12 – 1 p.m. hosted by NMSU’s Confucius Institute at the Taos Restaurant in Corbett Center. The cost is $7.89 plus tax per person or one meal swipe for NMSU faculty, staff and students. Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Gerald Thomas Hall, room 194, NMSU Creative Media Institute assistant professor Iliana Lapid will lead a discussion about documentary filmmaking in a Mayan village in Belize and show clips from student films.
On Thursday, a documentary about an effort to eradicate illiteracy among Cuban women and girls titled “Maestra” will be screened from 12-1 p.m. in the Corbett Center Auditorium, followed by a discussion led by Tamara Falicoy, associate professor and chair of the department of film at the University of Kansas. Falicoy will give another talk “about how international film festivals help shape and circulate Latin American cinema” from 4-5 p.m. at the Center for Latin American and Border Studies at Nason House, 1070 University Avenue. Thursday’s events will conclude with a presentation about global education’s role in preparing the next generation.
“The event highlights everything from academic lectures and international career opportunities to cultural performances and events, Menking said. “We encourage the entire NMSU and Las Cruces community to come out, enjoy and take advantage of these unique international opportunities.”
International Education Week is a collaborative initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to “promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.”
